The signet ring is a fantastic ring that is a signature piece for many - some have their initials or monogram engraved and others their family crest.
The story of the signet ring
The signet ring is perhaps the oldest known jewelry design that we still use today. Signet rings have been found as far back as 3500 BC! In the past, the signet ring was used to sign and stamp important documents - hence the name signet ring. The metal made a permanent mark in soft wax or clay, and wealthy men always carried one to sign an important business document. In some cases, a signature made with a signet ring was considered more authentic than a handwritten signature!
The signet rings were often designed to look stunning - but they always had a practical purpose. Each ring was unique. It usually contained the family crest, but also a personal detail that identified the ring wearer. Read more about the history of the signet ring
